CSOA Combined Sewer Overflow Analytics project (2020-2022)

In a recent project, Yorkshire Water, the University of Sheffield, Mounce HydroSmart and Siemens partnered to develop an innovative AI blockage predictor solution to reduce wastewater network blockages and reduce pollution. In operational deployment, 24% more blockages were found and 65% detected earlier.

The system integrates a cloud based data driven system using artificial neural networks and fuzzy logic with near real-time communications, taking advantage of the increasingly available real-time monitoring of water depths in CSO chambers. Following the successful validation of a pilot, the WSP has progressed to a full roll-out of CSOA, with more than 1200 assets deployed AI models in 2022.

The final product is incorporated into the Siemens product range for other water utilities.
